Might the Smoking Ban in England Drive Bingo Players On to the Net?

An abundance has been talked in the press not long ago about the bingo industry being hit because of the smoking ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive tax breaks to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But does the online version of this classic game offer a lifeline, or will it never compare to its land based kin?

Bingo is an age old game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had experienced a recent resurgence in popularity with younger men and women deciding to go to the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a Friday night. All this is about to change with the legislating of the smoking ban all over Britain.

Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 all public places will no longer be permitted to allow cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, which are possibly the most favorite places where players enjoy smoking.

The effects of the smoking ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo halls. Numbers have plunged and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for its life. But where did all the players go? Surely they haven’t cast aside this established game?

The answer is online. People realise that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer at the same time enjoying a cocktail and cig and still enjoy big cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the ban on smoking.

Of course wagering on online could never replace the social part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of players the rules have left a number of bingo players with little alternative.
