Will the Smoking Ban in Britain Drive Bingo Enthusiasts Online?

Much has been reported in the papers not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the anti smoking law in England. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge tax cuts to assist in keeping the industry alive. However does the internet variation of this traditional game provide a escape, or might it in no way compare to its land based kin?

Bingo has been an familiar game generally enjoyed by the "blue rinse" generation. In any case the game of late had seen a recent resurgence in popularity with younger men and women deciding to visit the bingo parlors rather than the bars on a weekend. This is all about to be destroyed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over UK.

No longer will players be able to puff on cigarettes whilst marking off their numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public area will no longer be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most popular places where people enjoy smoking.

The outcome of the smoking ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already not allowed in the bingo parlours. Players have plummeted and the business is absolutely fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Surely they haven’t deserted this established game?

The answer is on the internet. People realize that they can enjoy bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beer and fag and still have a chance at massive jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.

Of course playing on the net is unlikely to replace the collective aspect of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a group of people the rules have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with little alternative.
