Will the Anti Cigarette Law in Britain Force Bingo Players On to the Web?

Much has been written in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti smoking law in Britain. Conditions have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for big tax breaks to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. However does the internet variation of this traditional game offer a lifeline, or might it not compare to its land based equivalent?

Bingo has been an classic game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. However the game recently had undergone a recent return in popularity with younger men and women opting to go to the bingo parlors in place of the clubs on a Friday night. This is all about to be reversed with the enforcement of the anti smoking law all over United Kingdom.

No longer will gamblers be allowed to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 all public areas will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most popular areas where people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already forbidden in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the industry is literally fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Certainly they have not deserted this age old game?

The answer is on the web. People are now realizing that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a drink and fag and still have a chance at monstrous jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.

Of course betting on on the web will never replace the collective portion of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with little choice.
