Much has been talked in the papers recently about the bingo industry being hit because of the smoking ban in Britain. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to assist in keeping the businesses afloat. But will the net version of this classic game provide a escape, or will it in no way compare to its land based equivalent?

Bingo is an age old game normally played by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game lately had undergone a recent resurgence in popularity with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo parlors instead of the bars on a weekend. This is all about to change with the introduction of the anti smoking law around England and Wales.

Players will no longer be permitted to smoke whilst marking numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 all public places will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most common locations where people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Numbers have dropped and the business is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they have not cast aside this enduring game?

The answer is on the web. People know that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a cocktail and cig and still have a chance at huge cash rewards. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course playing on the web can never replace the social part of going over to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left a good many bingo players with no choice.
